Comcast Carrier Ethernet E-Line Services for Philadelphia Start-Up Communities.

Comcast Business recently announced that it will be providing carrier Ethernet E-Line service to Philadelphia start-up and technology communities hub located at The Microsoft Reactor.  The 100Mbs high performance and scalable E-Line service will support a variety of applications including the local area network (LAN), Internet connectivity and Wi-Fi.

The E-Line connects two network user interfaces (UNIs) at the Comcast Ethernet network and at the Microsoft Reactor. With the Ethernet E-Line, the Rector can provision a number of Ethernet based services including Ethernet Private Lines (EPL), Ethernet Virtual Private Lines (EVPL) and Ethernet Internet access.

Because of the broad market penetration of Ethernet services, the cost of Ethernet connectivity is significantly lower than that of the MPLS alternative. Moreover, Ethernet services are highly scalable. While the initial requirement is for 100Mbps, the Reactor can easily upgrade to higher bandwidths of up to 100Gbps in small increments.

The Microsoft Reactor is a technology hub located in the University City Science Center corporate offices at uCity Square, 3711 Market Street. The Rector was designed to connect Microsoft to Philadelphia and provides support to students, business start-ups and software programmers. The center will be used for a wide variety of activities including events, networking, training, and other activities.  In addition to high speed Internet access, Rector users will have easy access to Microsoft technologies.

The Reactor is a joint effort between the Science Center, SeventySix Capital – a local company and Wexford Science + Technology, university medical centers and a number of research entities.

For over fifty years, the Science Center has been supporting startup activities and R&D in the biological sciences, health sciences, physical sciences, and other emerging technologies. The Science center provides resources for all stages of the innovation cycle and is instrumental in helping scientists and engineers to take their ideas from conceptualization to IPO and beyond.
