16 Jul In order to add diversity, Telia Carrier adds new DWDM route as part of U.S. expansion
Telia Carrier is marching forward with the expansion of its U.S. network with a new southeastern Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) route. In order to keep pace with customer demand, Telia Carrier expanded its fiber backbone to connect Dallas to a new east-west route via Memphis to Nashville. In October, Telia Carrier, which is one of the world’s largest backbone providers, added a new route between its existing infrastructure in Ashburn, Virginia and Atlanta in order to better serve its data center customers.

The new route announced on Wednesday provides three new meshing options for Telia Carrier’s customers in the southeast in order to enable high availability and terabit scale capacity:
• Dallas to Ashburn (via Nashville/Chattanooga)
• Dallas to Chicago (via Nashville/Indianapolis)
• Dallas to Atlanta (via Nashville/Chattanooga)
“We consistently hear from our customers that they need more diversity in routes between major markets. This protects against interruptions in service, which is essential to customer experience in today’s competitive markets. This new expansion offers flexibility on several levels and lays the groundwork for future route investments in North America,” said Art Kazmierczak, Telia Carrier’s director of business and network development, in a statement. “We’re committed to the needs of our customers, so continuing our program of adding new routes between Tier 1 cities and providing connectivity at scale in Tier 2-3 edge markets along those routes is key to that strategy.”
Telia Carrier has been focused on offering diversity across its latency-optimized DWDM routes. The new route uses the latest generation of high-capacity enhanced-reach coherent DWDM technology and an open photonic layer to increase the local availability of high-speed wavelength, IP transit, cloud connect, Ethernet and IPX services for operators, content providers and enterprises alike.
“This is a new DWDM route that has been optimized using existing fiber infrastructure from five underlying providers and some new construction (roughly 25 miles) to connect the routes,” Kazmierczak said in an email to FierceTelecom. “This also includes a metro Dallas ring overbuild with multiple ROADM enabled long haul gateway points of presence.
“This route is implemented using Infinera’s latest C+L band flex grid open photonic layer. As it is an open system it supports the latest 600G/800G generation coherent modulation capabilities—for instance, Infinera ICE4/ICE6 or Ciena Waveserver5— for providing 100G and 400G native tributary interfaces for customer wavelength services with a total designed capacity exceeding 34 terabits over about 800 route miles.”
