FiberGuide advanced fiber optic training in South Africa is intended for optical network designers, planners, operation engineers and project managers. The certified courses are most suited for those involved with national backbone networks, metropolitan networks, fibre to the antenna, data centre interconnects or related long-distance networks.
As demand for bandwidth continues unabated and optical networks become ever more complex, telecommunication operators in South Africa need engineers who are well versed in the intricacies of optical networking. The dominance of optical networks in all facets of modern communication systems calls for different areas of fibre optic training in South Africa.
While there are already a good number of training companies offering courses targeting installation technicians in South Africa, FiberGuide focuses on fibre optic training for optical engineers. FiberGuide, under license from Optical Technology Training (OTT) offers Certified Optical Network Associate (CONA) and Certified Optical Network Engineer (CONE). Course details are given below.
Both CONA and CONE are certified by Optical Technology Training. OTT have specialised in fibre optics for over twenty-five years and have been designing vendor neutral training courses to meet industry requirements. OTT in-depth training courses are designed for those seeking deeper understanding of the subject matter. OTT develops courses for different roles and helps course attendees to face optical networking challenges today and in the future.
Attendees of CONA and CONE advanced fibre optic training are required to pass an examination at the end of the 5-day training class and complete a project assignment to be CONA certified.
All delegates who complete CONA and CONE training courses are eligible to receive the IEEE Continuing Education Units certificate. IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) is an authorised provider of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and Professional Development Hours (PDHs) for technical professionals looking for professional development opportunities. The IEEE Certificates Program allows training providers to offer certificates for learning events in the IEEE fields of interest.
CONA is accredited by the Sector Education and Training Authority in South Africa.
Certified optical network associate is an intermediate level course in which attendees learn the fundamentals of optical networking including the transmission of light through optical fibre and widely deployed commercial systems. Trainees learn how to design and plan efficient and cost-effective high-speed optical point to point links and networks that meet today’s and future requirements.
Certified optical network associate focuses on single or multiple channel systems using course wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) or dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) technologies. Systems capable of transmitting 10Gbps to 25Gbps per channel and up to 80 channels per fibre are studied.
The following topics are covered in CONA:

Successful completion of CONA is required to register for CONE
Certified Optical Network Engineer (CONE) course is an advanced training course in optical communications. The ever-insatiable demand for ultra-high capacity networks that deliver information across communities, national boundaries and across oceans is pushing the envelope on the capabilities of optical fibre systems. Understanding the limitations and how we can push the boundaries to enable higher capacity systems while ensuring highly scalable, reliable, low latency and energy efficient systems is critical.
This advanced course enables you to understand trends in higher speed transmission or 40Gbps, 100Gbps and beyond in core networks. This will help you determine how higher speed transmission requirements can be met by the systems you design.
