Women in STEM: 50% Discount on Optical Networking Training This July and August

Despite continued progress, women remain significantly underrepresented in STEM careers—especially in fields like optical communications and networking. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, women make up only 26% of the STEM workforce, with even fewer in engineering-focused disciplines. At FiberGuide, we’ve observed this imbalance first-hand: women comprise less than 5% of participants in our optical networking training workshops.

As part of our commitment to supporting women in STEM—particularly in the field of optical communications—FiberGuide is offering a 50% discount to eligible women enrolling in our Certified Optical Network Associate (CONA) training program this July and August, helping them build rewarding careers in optical networking.

What Is CONA?

CONA is a foundational course in optical networking, covering essential aspects of network infrastructure and transmission systems that utilize direct detection technology. Participants will develop practical skills in designing and planning high-speed, point-to-point optical links and networks that are both cost-effective and capable of meeting current and future demands.

The course emphasizes the key requirements for achieving reliable system performance in the networks that trainees design. It explores how various fiber characteristics—such as fiber type, attenuation, reflections, chromatic dispersion, four-wave mixing, and polarization mode dispersion (PMD)—can affect performance. Mitigating against impairments that distort signal quality is an important part of the training.
Delegates will also examine single and multi-channel systems using technologies like Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM), Short Wave Division Multiplexing (SWDM), LAN WDM, and Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM).

To earn CONA certification, participants must successfully complete both a theoretical exam and a practical project assignment. Certified individuals are then eligible to progress to the more advanced Certified Optical Network Engineer (CONE) course.

Who Should Attend?

This course is ideal for current and aspiring network planners, project managers, operations personnel, and anyone intending to pursue the CONE certification. There are no formal prerequisites for enrolling in the CONA course.

Why This Matters

The demand for optical networking professionals is rising sharply as industries and service providers expand their networks to support 5G, cloud computing, and AI-driven applications. Yet the voices and talents of women continue to be underrepresented in this growing sector.

We believe that empowering more women with these in-demand skills is not just a social responsibility—but a smart investment in the future of the optical communication industry.

Offer Details

To make participation in our optical networking training more accessible to women, we are offering two 50% discounted spots for women in each of our July 2025 and August 2025 CONA sessions.

Here’s what you need to know:

Eligibility: Open to both prospective and practicing women optical network professionals. There are no strict prerequisites, though basic knowledge of fiber optics is helpful.

Limited Availability: Only 2 discounted spots per session are available, offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Minimum Class Size: Each session must have at least 4 regular (non-discounted) participants for the discounted spots to be activated. If not, coupons may be carried forward to the next eligible session.
